RGTV Ep 25: Creating a Crowd Scene with Particular 2

By Harry Frank
July 21, 2009

In this rockin’ episode of Red Giant TV, Motion Designer Harry Frank shows you how to create a realistic crowd scene using Trapcode Particular 2. He’ll also create a similar scene using Trapcode Form.

This tutorial is from Harry Frank,  a truly truly talented Motion Designer and teacher, but also a great guy we enjoy collaberating with, here at All Bets Are Off.

With Harry’s permission, we are featuring his tutorial on this site, but we strongly encourage you to visit his @  GrayMachine.com – an awesome resource for AE users.  While there, check out the free training and templates, as well as his highly popular training series for Expressions (Vol. 1 & 2) and Trapcode Form.

Believe it or not, this entire crowd was created using ONLY 5 Crowd Control clips:

Popularity: 40%

Thanks! By the way, I follow you via Twitter but I wanted to know if there is a way to subscribe to your tutorials\blogs via email (not readers). In other words, I would get an email when there is a new post on your site. Thanks

Loved it once again. I was wondering about the project you made. Did you use the techniques in “More Techniques for Better Light Wraps” to create the video on the jumbo tron?

    Great Tutorial
    Thanks Aharon.

  6. Which resolution clips were used in the tutorial?

  7. Don’t thank me – thanks Harry Frank at http://www.graymachine.com/

  8. Rob – Harry used different sizes, but in the end he brought them all down to the 640×360 resolution. For a shot this far away from the people, you could *probably* go with even the smallest size – although I haven’t tested it.

  9. Zvi – if you sign up for a free crowd control account, it adds you to our newsletter. We send one out every few weeks with an update on tutorials and other cool stuff.

  10. Angel – I didn’t do the Jumbotron animation. Or rather, I didn’t create the screen graphics – I just Jumbotron-ized footage from the particular 2 commercial I directed. It was animated by Outpost Pictures (http://www.outpostpictures.tv/). But were I to do it, I’d actually use the layer style called Outer Glow. Probably the fastest solution. I’ve done it that way in a few projects.

So is Crowd Control 45,000 clips or 5 clips with 9000 particles in a crowd… ;-)

  13. Thanks Graymachine…you are an awesome moderator and tutorial maker. And thanks Aharon, for hosting this…

  14. Thanks Aharon Rabinowitz. How old are U ? Almost your TUTs are awesome. Thanks to share

  15. Ghoster – I’m old enough to know better… But let me put it this way… I saw Star Wars in the movie theater. And by Star Wars, I mean Episode 4: A New Hope.
